You're Beautiful
This was probably the first Korean drama I watched nonstop, straight through. There's 16 episodes, and I watched all of them in 3 days. You're Beautiful is the classic Korean teen drama, and I will never get sick of watching it over and over again. There's almost just enough drama, comedy, and romance to satisfy a Korean drama lover. I think I fell in love with this drama partly due to its very clever wordplay and romantic bits. The title, "You're Beautiful," is a great example of some of its wordplay, with Mi Nam being the main character, who's "beautiful." (mi nam in Korean means "beautiful/handsome guy") The Pig Rabbit and Tae Kyung's love troubles will forever be memorable drama moments for me.
Secret Garden
This is probably the classic Korean romantic comedy drama of all time. Its plot is of the basic Korean drama, centered around the love between a 2nd generation chaebol and stuntwoman. Besides the cliche plot, it has a lot of funny and romantic scenes, which is what got me to love this drama. The story, although based on the love of two people from different social classes, is more centered on the switching of the two lovers' bodies, creating a more fantasy-like feel for the drama. The body switch was probably the highlight of the drama, through which actors Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won were able to show their great acting skills, with the whole gender reversing thing. It was hilarious. And let's not forget, the sit-up love scene and the coffee cream kiss!
This list can't be complete without this drama! Although there was some romance, what's most memorable about this drama are its hilarious scenes. The premise makes for some pretty funny scenes, like the parts where Gae In encounters Jin Ho at some awkward moments, and mistakenly assumes that he's gay. I was really impressed with Son Ye Jin's acting, as she is known for more refined roles like the one in popular movie, The Classic. She really made me laugh my guts out, I just can't take her facial expressions off my mind! Along with a wide array of funny scenes, the drama also has the classic Cinderella story, but with a twist, where Jin Ho gets to be Gae In's fairy godmother. I'm a sucker for transformation scenes, where the heroine gets to be all dolled up, and refined as the ideal female, thanks to her male counterpart, the hero. I really liked how this drama, although with the typical plot and premise, incorporated some twists, making it different from regular Korean dramas, and all the more memorable at that.
